Rawdon Turner, the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) candidate for the St. Peter by-election on January 14, has announced the start of two housing developments aimed at increasing homeownership in the constituency.
During a television interview, Mr. Turner detailed plans for the projects, which include 16 homes in Pares Village and 37 homes in the Vernons area. He described the initiative as part of the government’s strategy to expand housing opportunities and empower residents.
“There’s no better feeling than being empowered with owning your own home. I think that’s one of the most significant achievements of anyone in this country,” he said.
According to Mr. Turner, preparatory work for the developments began before the by-election was announced.
“We started the cleaning of the land. We’re looking at putting the infrastructure in. The engineers are in assessment. We’re assessing the roadworks and what we’re going to do with the roadworks,” he said.
He added that his efforts to improve the area are not tied to the election.
“My commitment is not just…speaking about things that I want to do for the constituents of St. Peter. I’ve remained on the ground and I’ve continued to do the work.”
The housing developments are part of a broader push by the government to enhance the housing stock and provide opportunities for young people to own land and homes.
