Tomlinson Public Cemetery to Open on June 16 After Years of Delay

St John’s, Antigua and Barbuda — The long-awaited public cemetery at Tomlinson is set to officially open on June 16, following years of delays and public calls for expanded burial space.

The announcement was made during Thursday’s post-Cabinet media briefing, where Director General of Communications Maurice Merchant confirmed that all major construction work has been completed. Final touches are now underway to prepare the facility for use.

“The Cabinet has been informed by Public Works that the cemetery is ready,” Merchant said. “Only minor works remain, and it will be officially opened for public use on June 16.”

The development of the Tomlinson cemetery has faced several setbacks over the years, including funding constraints and infrastructural delays. Its opening is expected to ease pressure on existing burial grounds in the capital and surrounding areas.

The cemetery has already drawn attention for its modern design and aesthetic appeal, with members of the public and government officials praising its appearance and functionality.

Minister of Social Transformation Maria Browne, whose ministry oversaw aspects of the project, received commendation during the Cabinet meeting for bringing the initiative to completion.
