Stedman Scotland, 82, has been charged with six offenses following his arrest in St. John’s, which has sparked public outcry and an internal police investigation.
Scotland faces charges of Disorderly Conduct, Resisting Arrest, Battery on Police, Failing to Give Name, Failing to Comply with Lawful Direction, and Threatening Language. He has been granted station bail and is scheduled to appear in court on Monday, March 10.
His arrest outside a barber shop, captured on cellphone video, has drawn criticism over the officers’ actions. The footage shows two officers—one in plain clothes—removing Scotland from the establishment. Reports suggest the encounter stemmed from an alleged traffic violation.
In response to public concern, the Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda has confirmed that the Office of Professional Standards is investigating the conduct of the officers involved.
