Solidarity Statement from the Antigua and Barbuda Trade Union Congress (ABTUC)

The Antigua and Barbuda Trade Union Congress (ABTUC) stands in firm solidarity with the Antigua and Barbuda Workers’ Union (ABWU) in light of recent unwarranted and baseless attacks made by Prime Minister Gaston Browne. These allegations, which insinuate financial improprieties and ineffective representation, are not only unfounded but serve to undermine the critical role that unions play in fostering equality and justice in society.

Trade unions have been the bedrock of advancing workers’ rights and developing egalitarian societies. Through collective bargaining, advocacy, and principled representation, unions like the ABWU have been instrumental in improving the livelihoods of workers across various sectors.

The ABWU, in particular, has made remarkable strides in securing tangible benefits for hospitality workers. These achievements include the establishment of a Retirement Fund, ensuring financial security for workers in their later years, and Comprehensive Health Insurance, providing much-needed access to medical care for members and their families. These are not small victories but evidence of diligent and effective representation.

The ABTUC holds all its member unions accountable to the highest standards of integrity and service. However, we categorically reject any attempt to discredit the ABWU without substantiated evidence. Public officials must exercise responsibility in their statements, as baseless accusations risk eroding the trust and unity that are essential for advancing the welfare of our nation’s workers. Further, we condemn the callous and reckless publication of the ABWU’s sensitive financial information across the media. This is completely unacceptable! Will other affiliate unions of the TUC also become the target of this type of vulgar onslaught by the Prime Minister?

We call on Prime Minister Browne and all stakeholders to engage in constructive dialogue and collaboration with trade unions to address the challenges facing workers. Divisive rhetoric only serves to distract from the pressing issues affecting the labour force, such as fair wages, job security, and improved working conditions.

The ABTUC reaffirms its unwavering support for the Antigua and Barbuda Workers’ Union and its leadership. We will continue to stand together as a united labour movement, committed to defending the rights of workers and advancing the principles of fairness, equity, and social progress.

In Solidarity,

Garolyn Cornelius Hector
