Senator Lamin Newton calls for unity and youth involvement in inaugural Senate address

Newly appointed Senator Lamin Newton has urged Antiguans and Barbudans to embrace unity and engage in the political process during his inaugural address to the Senate on Tuesday.

Senator Newton, reflecting on recent personal losses, described life as “unpredictable and fragile” and encouraged his parliamentary colleagues to set aside differences.

He was making reference to the death on Monday of King Counsel Dane Hamilton Sr and Religious Leader Apostle Dr. Cedric Forbes, his pastor, last week.

“It is extremely important for us to put our differences aside,” he said. “We don’t get the next opportunity to say how we really feel or even ask for forgiveness.”

Newton expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Gaston Browne for appointing him to the Senate, likening his political journey to that of a seed being buried and nurtured.

“A few years ago, the members of the other side buried me, but what they didn’t understand was that they were burying a seed. And once you bury a seed, more than likely, it will germinate,” Newton said.

He called on young people to “catch the vision” of the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) and urged them to become active participants in the country’s political future.

“I encourage the young people of this country to come and legitimize your membership in the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party. If you don’t have a seat at the table, you don’t have a say,” he added.

Newton also spoke of overcoming what he described as “dark days” under previous leadership and praised the current administration for leading the country forward.

He concluded by thanking the ABLP leadership and its members for their support.
