Lamin Newton, the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) caretaker for All Saints East and St. Luke, says he has begun a master’s degree in international relations, encouraging others to continue their education while momentum is strong.

Speaking on The Morning Point programme, Newton said he recently enrolled in the postgraduate programme after completing undergraduate studies, stressing the importance of discipline and consistency.

“So I have gone on. I have since started a master’s degree in international relations,” Newton said.

He told listeners that pausing academic pursuits can derail progress, especially for adult learners.

“I want to say to persons who probably like — they have the mindset of taking a break — that’s the worst thing you can do,” he said. “While you have that momentum and you’re in that mode, just keep going, keep going, and just get it over with.”

Newton said his academic journey has required structure and sacrifice, particularly while balancing work and public responsibilities.

“As adults, adult learning sometimes can be a bit challenging,” he said. “But it just requires discipline.”

He said the experience reinforced his belief that education remains a critical equaliser in society.

“Education is definitely the key to unlocking the doors to success,” Newton said. “Education is the one thing that equates everybody across all sectors of society.”

Newton said he expects to complete the master’s programme within 18 months and encouraged Antiguans and Barbudans to take advantage of educational opportunities available locally.
