Senator Johnson Calls for Support Programmes for Vulnerable Girls

Independent Senator Kiz Johnson has urged the government to introduce programmes aimed at supporting vulnerable young women and addressing negative behavioural patterns.

Speaking during the 2025 budget debate, Senator Johnson said the proposed interventions would help girls who face significant challenges, including those who have run away from home or encountered legal troubles.

“We need a support programme for our vulnerable girls,” she said. “These are girls who may have run away from home or found themselves in trouble with the law. They need adequate intervention to shift their behaviour and recognise their worth.”

Senator Johnson outlined three key areas that should be addressed in the proposed programme:

• Education Support: “Providing support for learning so that they are able to complete their education is crucial.”
• Mentorship: “Mentoring these vulnerable girls can help them develop a better outlook on life and receive the guidance they need to navigate life’s challenges.”
• Family Therapy: “Therapy sessions with these girls and their parents can help shift the dynamics at home and eliminate the factors contributing to their behaviour.”

She said the programme would not only transform individual lives but also strengthen the community as a whole. “When we invest in these girls, we are investing in the future of our country,” she added.

Senator Johnson’s proposals align with other social initiatives outlined in the 2025 budget, which include plans for shelters and other support systems for vulnerable groups. She called on the government to act quickly, saying the initiative would play a vital role in addressing the social challenges faced by young women.

“This is about recognising their worth and giving them the tools they need to succeed,” she said.
