Scholarships Double Under Current Administration for Medical and Technical Fields
The Antigua and Barbuda government has successfully doubled the number of scholarships available for students pursuing careers in medicine and other high-demand fields, reflecting a strategic commitment to workforce development.
Prime Minister Gaston Browne highlighted the government’s efforts to ensure that more local students have access to educational opportunities in key sectors.
“Scholarships to Cuba, to China, and other countries have virtually doubled under this administration,” Browne stated. “We made representation to increase the amounts, and we have been successful in that regard.”
The scholarships, which cover fields such as medical science, nursing, biochemistry, and technical disciplines, are part of the government’s broader strategy to meet the growing demand for skilled professionals.
“We have scholarships for persons studying medicine, and especially those going into nursing, biochemistry, and related fields,” Browne explained.
The Prime Minister noted that despite these opportunities, some scholarships remain unfilled due to a lack of awareness and interest among students.
“We have bad scholarships that are not even taken up from other countries in Europe and the Middle East,” Browne said. He emphasized the need for local students to capitalize on these opportunities, particularly as global demand for healthcare professionals continues to rise.
In discussing the broader impact of these educational investments, Browne linked the scholarship programs to the country’s long-term goals of improving healthcare and technical industries.
“We need skilled workers not only to address local needs but also to position ourselves in the global market,” he asserted.
Browne also pointed to the migration patterns of nurses, noting that many Antiguan healthcare professionals seek opportunities abroad due to the high demand for their skills.
He suggested that with proper training and support, students could not only contribute to the country’s healthcare system but also export their skills internationally, benefiting the local economy in the process.
