Royal Caribbean Still Interested in Fort James Project as Government Weighs Local Development Option
The government of Antigua and Barbuda is continuing discussions over the proposed Royal Caribbean development at Fort James, with officials confirming that the cruise line remains interested in pursuing the long-awaited tourism project.
Tourism Minister Charles ‘Max’ Fernandez revealed that Royal Caribbean has expressed ongoing interest but is now seeking a partner to help carry the investment forward.
“We met with Royal Caribbean a couple of months ago in Florida, and they indicated they are still interested,” Fernandez said.
“They are looking for a cruise partner to move the project ahead.”
The Fort James proposal, which predates the COVID-19 pandemic, was initially seen as a major investment opportunity that would enhance Antigua’s cruise infrastructure and beach tourism offering. However, the global shutdown in cruise operations stalled progress.
Fernandez noted that, in the meantime, the Cabinet is also exploring the possibility of developing the site through local investment. A decision on the way forward is expected within the coming months.
The Minister’s comments come amid a broader push to strengthen Antigua’s position in the regional cruise market, with several infrastructure projects — including the new upland development and expanded port facilities — set to come online by the end of the year.
