Antigua Launches On-Site Concrete Production for Faster, Climate-Resilient Roads

The Ministry of Works has begun testing and training for a new pugmill system that will enable on-site production of roller compacted concrete roads in communities across Antigua and Barbuda.

The update was shared Monday by Works Minister Maria Vanessa Browne, who described the equipment as a step toward climate-resilient infrastructure.

The process involves loading aggregates into the pugmill in precise amounts.

The resulting concrete is moved via belt into a truck, poured into a spreader, and compacted by roller.

According to Browne, this special concrete mix reaches maximum strength in under five days—compared to more than 20 days for regular concrete.

The Ministry says the initiative supports better roads and more resilient communities under the hashtags #WorksOnTheMove, #BetterRoads, and #ClimateResilientInfrastructure.
