Prime Minister Gaston Browne has criticised the Antigua and Barbuda Workers’ Union (ABWU) for its management of a snackette that has reportedly incurred substantial financial losses.
Speaking on Pointe FM, Mr Browne revealed that the snackette has been losing an average of $430,000 annually over the past two years, describing the situation as “economic irrationality.”
“No business can survive if its losses exceed its sales,” the Prime Minister said. “This snackette is costing members hundreds of thousands of dollars every year, and there’s no clear explanation for these losses.”
He noted that the snackette’s location, limited foot traffic, and inconsistent hours of operation likely contribute to its financial struggles.
“Most of the time, the place is closed. When it is open, it’s not selling enough to justify these massive losses. What are they selling—lobster and caviar for free?” he asked rhetorically.
Mr Browne also questioned whether the timing of the losses was politically motivated, pointing out that they spiked during election years. “In 2022 and 2023, the losses were higher than usual, reaching over $440,000. That’s an interesting trend,” he said.
The Prime Minister called on the union to be more transparent about its financial practices and prioritise initiatives that provide value to its members.
