PM Highlights Youth Development Through Sports, Affirms Joel Rayne’s Role
Prime Minister Gaston Browne has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to youth empowerment through sport, pointing to the appointment of Joel Rayne as Deputy Commissioner of Sports as a key example of that policy in action.
Speaking on his weekly Pointe FM radio programme, Browne said Rayne’s elevation reflects the government’s broader goal of preparing the next generation for leadership. “Joel Rayne is a bright, competent young man, and this appointment is part of a deliberate strategy to create opportunities for youth,” the Prime Minister stated.
He stressed that the Ministry of Sports is not only tasked with enhancing athletic performance but also with cultivating leadership and social development. “We see sport as a developmental tool—not just for competition, but for discipline, character building, and even as an export industry,” Browne said.
The Prime Minister also underscored the importance of creating more pathways for young professionals within government agencies. “We have to empower our young people and give them meaningful roles. That’s the only way to ensure sustainability,” he added.
Rayne’s appointment was previously announced, but Browne’s latest comments signal a strong endorsement of his role and the direction of the country’s sports development policy.
