PM Browne Lauds Biden’s Pardon of Marcus Garvey, Acknowledges CARICOM Advocacy

Prime Minister Gaston Browne has welcomed U.S. President Joe Biden’s posthumous pardon of Marcus Garvey, hailing it as a long-overdue correction of a historical injustice. Garvey, a celebrated Black nationalist leader, was convicted of mail fraud in 1923 in a case widely regarded as politically motivated.

Browne revealed that he and other CARICOM leaders had written to President Biden advocating for Garvey’s exoneration, emphasizing his wrongful imprisonment for activism aimed at uniting and uplifting Black communities. “We are happy that President Biden has supported and granted the pardon,” Browne stated, commending the U.S. leader and his administration for their decision.

Garvey, who passed away in 1940, founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association and the Black Star Line, initiatives that promoted Black pride and economic independence. The pardon acknowledges his monumental contributions and seeks to rectify the damage caused by his unjust conviction.

The decision, announced on January 19, has been widely celebrated as a significant step toward addressing historical wrongs.
