Patients Abandoned at Hospital to be Transferred to New Wellness Facility, Says Chief of Staff Lionel Max Hurst

Chief of Staff Lionel Max Hurst revealed that patients abandoned at the Sir Lester Bird Medical Center will soon be transferred to the newly developed wellness facility in Sea View Farm. Many of these individuals, who have recovered from mental illness, remain in care due to societal stigma, with families often unwilling to welcome them back into their homes. Hurst emphasized that this shift aims to provide proper care and medications to those in need, while also addressing the deeper issue of stigma surrounding mental health in the country.

The wellness center will not only focus on mental health services but will also provide counseling for women who have suffered assault and youths needing support as ordered by the courts. Hurst underscored the importance of these additional services, explaining that the facility will serve a wide range of vulnerable individuals, including families facing crises.

Eleven individuals, currently residing at the Sir Lester Bird Medical Center, will also be moved to the wellness center. Hurst noted that these beds are needed for patients who are actively ill, and it is inappropriate for them to remain occupied by those abandoned by their families.

Architects and engineers are currently assessing the space, and plans for the wellness facility may include the construction of additional structures. The goal is to create a transformative space that offers essential care and support to those who need it most.
