Prime Minister Gaston Browne has addressed criticisms from opposition Senator Pearl Quinn-Williams, calling for a higher standard of political discourse and emphasizing the importance of competence and training in leadership.

Responding to Senator Quinn-Williams’ claims about the government’s economic policies, Browne rejected her assessment as lacking substance.

He noted the importance of evidence-based arguments and urged opposition members to present well-researched alternatives.

“You cannot just flippantly dismiss the budget as inadequate without providing evidence or alternatives,” Browne said, pointing to the advance availability of national budget documents to allow for thorough review and critique.

Browne also highlighted the role of competence and professional training in leadership, arguing that effective governance requires a combination of education, experience, and analytical skills.

“There is a direct correlation between training, education, and performance. Leaders must possess the skills necessary to navigate a globally competitive environment,” he stated.

While acknowledging that formal education is not the sole measure of capability, Browne argued that it forms a crucial foundation for sound decision-making and governance.

The Prime Minister expressed disappointment with the opposition’s approach, describing it as overly reliant on personal attacks and lacking in substantive policy discussion.

“A robust opposition challenges the government on performance and accountability, not through insults but through well-argued policy positions,” Browne said.

He encouraged opposition members to engage in meaningful debates and focus on contributing viable solutions to national issues.

Looking ahead, Browne reiterated his government’s commitment to advancing Antigua and Barbuda’s development through strategic investments and citizen empowerment.

“Governance is about making impactful decisions that benefit everyone,” he said. “Let us raise the standard of political discourse and focus on building a better Antigua and Barbuda.”
