“Tell the Truth, Face the People”: Nicholas Blasts UPP for ‘Lies and Innuendo’

St John’s City East MP Melford Nicholas has accused the opposition United Progressive Party (UPP) of spreading misinformation in a bid to destabilise public confidence, warning supporters not to be misled by what he described as a campaign of “lies and innuendo.”

Speaking at an Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) rally on Friday night, Nicholas said the government had “nothing to hide,” referencing Prime Minister Gaston Browne’s recent national television appearance alongside government professionals to address public concerns about a controversial transaction.

“I watched online and I’m surprised that Sir Lester Medical Center and the emergency medical services were not overwhelmed last night,” Nicholas said, referring to what he claimed was the opposition’s visible disappointment that the Prime Minister had addressed the issue without faltering.

“They were hoping the Prime Minister would stumble. Instead, what they saw was a demonstration of leadership and full transparency,” he added.

The MP claimed that the opposition’s strategy now hinges on “opportunistic” attempts to “fund the discourse in this country about lies and innuendo,” as they face internal leadership struggles.

Nicholas also took aim at what he characterised as the UPP’s lack of credible leadership. “They can’t find a leadership that is competent and credible to present themselves to the public as an alternative,” he said.

He urged Labour Party supporters to remain unified and vigilant, warning that low turnout in the last general election nearly cost them crucial victories.

“Some of our comrades, for whatever reason, stayed home. We cannot let that happen again,” Nicholas said. “We have nothing to be ashamed of. We have performed, and we have led with integrity and openness.”

The remarks formed part of a broader speech in which Nicholas championed the ABLP’s governance record, including economic recovery, infrastructure improvements, and social programmes.

The UPP has yet to respond to Nicholas’s statements.
