HWPL and The University of the West Indies Global Campus Hold Peace Walk and Unveil New Monument in Antigua and Barbuda

The people of St John’s, Antigua and Barbuda have made the tremendous choice to prioritize peace in their nation, communities, schools, and homes. International Peace NGO Heavenly Culture World Peace Restoration of Light (HWPL) and its partner organizations in Antigua and Barbuda are building networks of peacemakers to inspire positive change for peace.

On Friday, HWPL and the University of the West Indies Global Campus co-hosted a Peace Walk and Monument Unveiling Event. The purpose of this Peace Walk and Monument Unveiling was to bring together the regional voices of youth, government, and civil society leadership to promote a spirit of peace and unity across the nation.

This joyous occasion began with a peace walk and speeches about the work needed to protect lasting peace from esteemed speakers Honourable Obsert Frederick, Speaker of the House of Representatives; Honourable Daryll Matthew, Minister of Education, Sports, and the Creative Industries; a representative from the University of the West Indies Global Campus, and an HWPL representative.

Speaker of the House of Representatives Obsert Frederick shared the importance of continuing peacework, thanking HWPL and HWPL’s Chairman Lee Man-Hee and promising: “I, myself, am committed to peace and advance the work of HWPL’s peace education and [the Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War] DPCW. Our legislation must continue to promote the creation of a culture of peace through peace education. As speaker, I will promote peace at every opportunity, starting with supporting the DPCW on the house foor, and beginning a peaceful mentorship program for our young men with the assistance of HWPL in January.”

Following this, a new peace monument was commemorated that will stand as a lasting testament and commitment to peace for future generations. HWPL, under leadership of Chairman Lee Man-Hee, has donated several monuments in collaboration with local partners throughout the region since 2019 in order to empower citizens from all walks of life to lead these eforts beginning frst within themselves, their homes, and in their schools and communities.

Erected at the University of the West Indies Global Campus in St. John’s, this peace monument stands as a physical memorial of the work needed to establish peace in this world as a lasting legacy for our future generations. Through this monument, citizens now have a beautiful reminder that peace is possible if all make an efort. The new peace monument was unveiled with a formal ceremony held at noon on December 6, 2024.

HWPL is a non-governmental organization affiliated with the United Nations Economic and Social Council and the United Nations Development Programme.

The organization advocates for the cessation of war and conflict worldwide. The founding organization, HWPL, is an international peace organization founded for global peace and cessation of war.

HWPL carries out its peace initiatives worldwide by working with its affiliate partners, the International Women’s Peace Group and the International Peace Youth Group. Moreover, regional leaders are participating in HWPL’s Peace Advisory Council and as HWPL Publicity Ambassadors.

Understanding the need for peace eforts to be intentionally built into the fabric of all levels of society – within government, education, and the community – HWPL is working with Antiguan leaders at all levels to ensure that peace continues to be upheld as not only a priority, but a norm. HWPL holds many events aiming to raise awareness about the necessity of peace work as outlined by HWPL’s governing legislative peace document, the Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War (DPCW).

Minister of Education, Sports, and the Creative Industries, Honourable Daryll Matthew shared his conviction and eforts to help Antigua and Barbuda lead as a champion of peace in the Caribbean in partnership with HWPL, explaining: “This is why peace education is not just important; it is urgent.

It equips young minds with the tools to resolve conficts peacefully, to value diversity, and to foster empathy. To this end, I stand here proud to state that I am committed to ensuring that peace education will be integrated into the curricula of educational institutions across our nation.

HWPL has been a steadfast advocate for global peace, promoting its Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War (DPC) and championing peace education worldwide. Today, I invite all of us to unite as one in this noble cause. Let us support peace education and the DPCW, working hand in hand to transform our collective dream of peace into a lasting reality.”

Changing a world of war and confict into a world of peace is a mission in which all can participate – HWPL, its partners, and everyone else around the globe. As HWPL’s Chairman Lee has said, “we must all become messengers of peace and leave a lasting legacy of peace for future generations.”

Today, in Antigua and Barbuda, that goal has now become a step closer to reality. As the country continues to prioritize the work of peace, the efects will multiply across communities in St. John’s, the country, and the Caribbean at large.
