The government of Antigua and Barbuda has unveiled plans to construct new hospital facilities as part of its ongoing effort to strengthen the nation’s healthcare system and improve access to medical services.
Prime Minister Gaston Browne made the announcement during his weekend radio programme, Browne and Browne, stating that the new infrastructure will form part of a broader strategy to decentralise health services and ensure greater equity in public health delivery.
“We are in the process of finalising plans to build a new hospital facility at Perry Bay,” Browne said. “It will serve as an extension of the Mount St. John’s Medical Centre, particularly to support outpatient and diagnostic services.”
The Prime Minister indicated that the development is part of a long-term vision to establish modern and accessible healthcare facilities across the island, reducing the burden on the main hospital and allowing for more specialised care.
Browne also revealed that the government will soon begin work on a second facility in the Sir George Walter Highway area. “We’ve already identified government land near the transport board,” he added. “This is about strengthening resilience in our healthcare system.”
The new projects come amid broader national conversations about healthcare access, especially following the transfer of patients from the old Clarevue Psychiatric Hospital to the new Mental Health and Wellness Centre.
In his remarks, Browne reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving healthcare services not just through infrastructure, but also via enhanced training, equipment, and staffing.
No official timeline has been announced for the start of construction, but Cabinet is expected to finalise budgetary allocations and partnerships in the coming months.
