Call for Decency, Dialogue, and Swift Resolution in Ongoing Teachers’ Industrial Action

The National Student Council of Antigua and Barbuda expresses deep concern over the ongoing industrial action by the Antigua and Barbuda Union of Teachers, which began on May 2, 2025, during a critical time in the academic year.

As students across the nation prepare for end-of-year assessments and examinations, the continued withholding of teachers’ services is having a

significant negative impact on our education, well-being, and academic outcomes.

We recognize the grievances expressed by the Antigua and Barbuda Union of Teachers, particularly regarding outstanding allowances and unresolved issues from the Collective

Bargaining Agreement. At the same time, we note the rising public tensions, including multiple verbal attacks by the Honourable Prime Minister on the Union, its President, and the teaching profession as a whole.

At this moment, we make the following urgent appeals:

  1. To the Government of Antigua and Barbuda – We urge the Ministry of Education and the Government to treat this matter with the seriousness it deserves by prioritizing

respectful and meaningful dialogue with the Union. Furthermore, we call for the

implementation of stronger administrative and management practices within the Ministry to prevent the recurrence of these issues.

  • To the Antigua and Barbuda Union of Teachers – We acknowledge your right to

protest and fight for fair treatment. However, we ask that as you continue to advocate for yourselves, you also consider the position of the thousands of students who are missing valuable classroom time and whose future depends on the outcomes of this term.

  • To Both Parties – The students of Antigua and Barbuda must not be casualties in this dispute. We implore both sides to place the best interests of the nation’s children at the forefront and move swiftly toward a resolution that allows teachers to return to the classroom and students to resume learning without further delay.

We call for decency, dialogue, and compassion in all communications and actions going

forward. Let us remember that the goal of education is not only the advancement of knowledge but the protection of our nation’s future.
