The mother of a woman sentenced to 27 years in prison for killing a 66-year-old, Jane Finch, in Antigua says her daughter was failed by the mental health system.
Leandra Fontaine said that her daughter, 24-year-old Britany John Baptiste, was mentally ill and had shown signs of distress long before the fatal incident in 2021. She said repeated attempts to get help were met with inaction.
“They told me she had to commit a crime or hurt herself before they could help,” Fontaine said. “Now someone is dead, and my daughter is in prison.”
Britany admitted to killing Jane Finch while hallucinating. A psychiatrist testified she was suffering from cannabis-induced psychosis at the time and had a history of mental health issues, including ADHD and dyslexia.
Her lawyer has appealed the sentence, arguing it is excessive for a manslaughter conviction and that the judge offered no clear basis for the length of the term.
Fontaine extended her condolences to the victim’s family, saying: “If I could take it back, I would. I’m sorry.”
