Minister George Applauds ECAB’s Sports Scholarship Programme

Minister of Sports and Creative Industries Dwayne George has applauded the Eastern Caribbean Amalgamated Bank (ECAB) for being a good corporate citizen as the financial institution launched its Game Changers Scholarship.

A ceremony was held on Monday morning at the bank’s Redcliffe Street Branch on Monday morning, where the bank’s management announced that ECAB Game Changers Scholarship will be awarded annually, and is intended to assist young athletes competing in track and field, swimming and football.

It was stated that the scholarship, in the amount of EC $25,000, is intended to ease the financial burden associated with pursuing both academic and athletic excellence internationally.

Minister George, on behalf of the Government of Antigua and Barbuda, underscored the importance of collaboration in ensuring young athletes are given the opportunity at becoming the best they can in whatever sporting discipline they choose, singling out ECAB for its efforts.

“I understand fully the dreams and aspirations many young Antiguans and Barbudans have of mastering the sporting disciplines in which they are interested and competing at the national and international levels. Dreams of becoming the next Joella Lloyd, Janil Williams, Peter Byers, Quinton Griffith and Karin Clashing,” he said.

“As a government, and in partnership with Corporate Antigua and Barbuda, we must do all in our power to ensure the dreams and aspirations of our future generation are realised, while at the same time place emphasis on sports development”.

The Minister of Sports and Creative Industries stressed the importance of sports in the growth and development of young people, adding ECAB’s decision to establish a scholarship programme, crafted to place emphasis on youth and sports development in Antigua and Barbuda must be highly commended.

“To ECAB, you have consistently proven to be a cut above the rest. Your support in education, community development and culture have not gone unnoticed. Again, we applaud your continued efforts as good Corporate Citizens and wish you success in your future endeavours,” Minister Dwayne George noted.

Student athletes who have demonstrated excellence in football, swimming and track and field, and have secured a partial scholarship from an accredited high school, college or university are eligible to apply.

According to ECAB, applicants must be residents of Antigua and Barbuda between the ages of 14 and 21 years-old, entering their first year of study abroad.

Applications will be reviewed by the ECAB Game Changers Scholarship Selection Committee, and the recipient will be chosen based on academic achievement, demonstrated financial need, the quality and content of the applicant’s essay, a recommendation from the applicant’s coach, and their performance during the interview process for shortlisted applicants.
