Minister Anthony Smith Pays Emotional Tribute to Nephew Jernya Oscar at Candlelight Vigil
A solemn candlelight vigil was held last night in memory of Jernya Oscar, drawing family, friends, and community members in a show of unity and remembrance.
Among those who paid tribute was Hon. Anthony Smith, Minister of Agriculture, who shared a deeply personal reflection on his nephew’s life, recalling his intelligence, determination, and the profound impact he had on those around him.
Smith acknowledged the grief felt by the family and the wider community, describing the loss as almost incomprehensible.
“Every day, we have to lean on each other for support. It’s difficult, and it will remain difficult, but having the love and encouragement of those around us helps us to carry on,” he said.
He reflected on his excitement when he first learned he would become an uncle, a role he embraced wholeheartedly. “I was 11 years old, and I remember running to school to tell my friends, ‘I’m going to be an uncle.’ I was more excited than my sister. That moment meant the world to me,” he said.
Describing Jernya as a disciplined and determined young man, Smith recounted how his nephew’s passion for football shaped his journey. “He was incredibly talented. When he decided he wanted to be a goalkeeper, I questioned it at first because I knew how skilled he was as an outfield player. But once I saw him in action, I had to eat my words. He was exceptional—quick, accurate, and fearless.”
Jernya’s ambition extended beyond the football field. Smith detailed his transition from Iowa to Florida International University, where he pursued both academic and athletic goals with unwavering commitment.
“When he set his mind to something, he mapped it all out. He didn’t leave anything to chance. He was meticulous in planning his future, and he had the talent and discipline to achieve it.”
The Minister admitted that the sudden loss still does not feel real. “There are moments when I see his picture on a family member’s phone and instinctively think he’s about to send me a message. Then reality sets in,” he said.
While the grief remains overwhelming, Smith urged those in attendance to celebrate Jernya’s life and legacy rather than focus solely on the tragedy of his passing. “He left an impact. He created memories with everyone here tonight. That’s something we must cherish,” he said.
Expressing deep gratitude for the outpouring of support, Smith thanked the community for standing with the family during this painful time.
The funeral service for Jernya Oscar will be held on Wednesday, January 29, at the Lebanon Moravian Church, with tributes beginning at 12:30 PM and the service at 1:30 PM. He will be laid to rest at Bathsheba Gardens in Sea View Farm.
Smith concluded with a heartfelt farewell: “Sleep in eternal peace, my dear nephew. You will always have a place in our hearts.”
