The government of Antigua and Barbuda is set to increase the minimum wage once more, according to Prime Minister Gaston Browne.

Speaking on a recent radio program, Browne outlined the administration’s continued commitment to improving worker welfare, citing previous wage increases and upcoming negotiations with public sector employees.

“We have routinely increased the minimum wage, and we will be doing so again very shortly,” the Prime Minister said. He emphasized that under his administration, public sector workers have never had to resort to strikes or agitation to secure pay increases.

Browne pointed out that the government has consistently ensured that public servants benefit from the country’s economic growth. “We want public servants to share equitably in the gains of the economy,” he remarked, adding that negotiations for another public sector pay increase would commence soon.

While the Prime Minister did not commit to a specific timeline, he expressed hope that the government could implement the next pay increase by 2025. “I’m not giving a firm commitment, but I want to signal to public servants that you don’t have to fight us. As the economy grows, we will continue to increase your pay,” he said.

The Prime Minister also called on private sector employers to adopt a similar approach. “Workers are the most significant asset we have, both in the public and private sectors. They too must share equitably in the gains of the country,” he stated.

This announcement comes amidst broader efforts by the government to balance economic growth with equitable distribution of benefits. The Prime Minister underscored the importance of supporting workers as a cornerstone of national development.

Public reaction to the proposed minimum wage increase is expected to be closely monitored, as the government continues to focus on initiatives aimed at enhancing living standards for all citizens.
