Metropolitan University Celebrates Graduation & White Coat Ceremony

Metropolitan University College of Medicine proudly hosted its Graduation and White Coat Ceremony on January 24th, 2026, at the Royalton Antigua Resort on Five Islands, St. John’s. This landmark occasion celebrated both the academic achievement of our graduates and the professional induction of new and current students into the medical sciences, symbolizing the continuity of learning, service, and commitment to the medical profession. The Dean of Student Services, Dr. Briseida Xhelaj welcomed everyone and gave warm opening remarks to inaugurate the ceremony.
The graduation segment of the ceremony honored graduate students from 2019 – 2025 who have successfully completed their academic and clinical training, marking the culmination of years of rigorous academic studies, clinical exposure and personal sacrifice. These graduates represent the next generation of healthcare professionals and community leaders who are proudly serving communities in Antigua, the Caribbean Region and across the globe. The Dean of the medical college, Dr. Gurpreeth Sandhu addressed the graduates in a heartfelt speech reminding all the immense sacrifices they have made and the magnitude of the responsibilities they are entrusted with by their patients. Graduate Dr. Stephanie Deib spoke on behalf of the graduates, reminiscing about the challenges faced and the loyal support of faculty during her studies. Dr. Deib expressed her gratitude to the university for providing her and fellow graduates with an opportunity to make their dreams a reality.
In parallel, the White Coat Ceremony welcomed the basic sciences and clinical students into the medical profession through a time-honored rite of passage. As students donned their White Coats, they formally entered the medical profession as student doctors, embracing the values of integrity, responsibility, empathy and lifelong learning. Special Keynote Speaker, Dr. Jose Humphrey, delivered an impactful address to the students, reminding them that the white coat serves not only as a symbol of scientific inquiry and clinical responsibility but also as a reminder of the trust placed in physicians by society.
The combined ceremony reflected Metropolitan University’s commitment to excellence in medical education across all stages of training. By honoring both our graduates and our current students in a single event, the university highlighted the interconnected nature of medical education – from foundational sciences to clinical practice. Vice President, Mr. TirumalDevulapalli, strongly emphasized the core value system of the management and faculty and their commitment and sacrifices made to ensure students and graduates receive the besteducation, mentoring and services they deserve. Following the ceremony, honored guests, graduates and students joined in a celebratory dinner and cocktail segment on the terrace.

The event was attended by the Governor General, His Excellency Sir Rodney Williams, the Minister of Education, Sports & Creative Industries, the Honorable Daryll Matthew, the Honorary Indian Counsel to Antigua, Mr. Vijay Tewani, representatives from various government ministries and sectors, prominent businesses, physicians and well-wishers. The university shareholders, directors, administrators, faculty, staff, family and friends all proudly gather to celebrate and support the graduates and white coat recipients on this memorable milestone.
