Mehul Choksi has launched a multi-million-dollar lawsuit in the UK against the Indian government and five others, claiming their actions caused him severe mental and physical trauma.

The lawsuit, which could impact UK-India Free Trade Agreement negotiations, is seen as a potential tactic to delay his extradition. Choksi, who is in Belgium for medical treatment, is leveraging the UK legal system to attract media attention and bolster his bid for asylum, even though the alleged incident occurred in Antigua and Barbuda.

India holds extradition treaties with both the UK and Belgium. Filed by a London-based law firm in the UK High Court, Choksi’s case seeks compensation for distress, anxiety, medical expenses, and costs related to what he describes as an abduction. The legal proceedings could take years to resolve, as defendants must first respond to the claim and determine whether to contest it.
