The Honourable Daryll S. Matthew, Minister of Education, Sports and the Creative Industries, along with the Antigua Barbuda Festivals Commission, extend prayers for strength and healing to our beloved cultural icon, Sir McLean Emmanuel “King Short Shirt,” as he remains hospitalized. Our nation stands united in faith and gratitude for our icon that has given so much to Antigua and Barbuda.

As I rewatch King Short Shirt’s most recent performance on Thursday, October 30th, 2025, at the Independence Calypso Competition, where he appeared as a guest artiste, I am reminded, yet once again, of the power of his legacy. At 83 years old, Sir McLean delivered “Our Pledge” with unwavering conviction, deep patriotism, grace, strength, and emotional clarity. His iconic voice did not crack; instead, it stood firm, rich, steady, and commanding, perfectly matching the weight and sincerity of his message. It was not merely a performance; it was a masterclass in purpose, pride, and national identity. Minister Matthew went to say. Sir McLean is more than a calypsonian for us; he is a living monument of our cultural history, a storyteller of our struggles and triumphs, and a guardian of our national conscience.
