Mary John Addresses Misattribution of Humanitarian Work in Governor-General’s Award Announcement
It is with a deep sense of regret that I, Mary John, advise the public in general and my well-wishers, in particular, of my personal and professional conflict regarding the award bestowed on me by the Governor-General in December 2024.
Following the ceremony, I realized, with considerable dismay, that the credit for my years of humanitarian work with the vulnerable and marginalized members of our society had been accorded – in the press – to another honoree who has made no known contributions in this field.
I shared my concerns with H.E. Sir Rodney Williams and Lady Williams, and I have waited four weeks for a public correction of the citation associated with that person, John Swift, Jr.
Since that has not materialized, I feel duty-bound to advise the public, since I strongly feel that my efforts and the work of my supporters have been undervalued and, to some extent, discredited.
This is not an attempt at self-promotion, I assure you, all. Rather, it if simply am not comfortable. Despite this, I think the governor – General and his wife for having considered me and my contributions and found them worthy of the honor bestowed.
I also take this opportunity to thank my well-wishers and the supporters of the Mary John Foundation, with the hope that you will continue to partner with me in the important work we have been doing to help those who are the most in need of ongoing assistance.
