A man has been ordered to pay $20,000 in compensation after admitting to seriously injuring his neighbour during a 2022 attack in New Winthropes.

Donneil Anthony pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm when he appeared before the High Court. The charge stems from a June 12 incident in which Hampson sustained a severe arm injury.

The court heard that Hampson was walking in the area when Anthony, who had been behaving aggressively, suddenly attacked him with a piece of wood. Hampson fled as Anthony pursued him, but the assault was halted when a bystander intervened.

Hampson was later taken to hospital, where doctors confirmed a displaced fracture requiring surgery. Metal plates and screws were inserted to stabilise the injury.

No clear motive for the attack was established.

The court ordered Anthony to make an immediate payment of $5,000, with the remaining balance to be paid in $1,000 monthly instalments starting next month. Failure to comply could result in a six-month prison sentence.
