A man has been sentenced to prison after a routine traffic stop led to the discovery of an illegal firearm and ammunition.

Roan Hector was handed a two-year and two-month sentence for illegal gun possession, alongside a concurrent nine-month term for ammunition possession. Magistrate Ngaio Emanuel delivered the ruling on Thursday.

The charges stemmed from an incident on 27 April, when police observed Hector’s vehicle reversing suspiciously along American Road near police headquarters. Officers stopped the car and conducted a search, uncovering a firearm in a black shopping bag. The weapon was loaded with ten rounds of 9mm ammunition.

Local laws require custodial sentences for illegal firearm offences. With the sentences running concurrently, Hector will serve a total of two years and two months in prison.
