UWI SRC Reports Magnitude 3.8 Earthquake in the Caribbean Region

The University of the West Indies (UWI) Seismic Research Centre (SRC) recorded a magnitude 3.8 earthquake in the Caribbean region on Monday, December 30, 2024.

The event occurred at 8:59 am local time (12:59 UTC), with its epicenter located at a depth of 105 kilometers.

Preliminary calculations place the earthquake’s coordinates at latitude 17.63N and longitude 62.93W. The tremor was reported northwest of several major cities, including:

  • Basseterre, Saint Kitts and Nevis: 42 kilometers northwest
  • Brades, Montserrat: 122 kilometers northwest
  • Saint John’s, Antigua and Barbuda: 133 kilometers northwest

The SRC emphasized that this location was determined automatically by computer algorithms and may be subject to revision following further analysis by experts.

Residents are urged to monitor official channels for updates and safety guidance. No reports of damage or injuries have been received as of this time.
