Light Earthquake Strikes Near Barbuda

A light magnitude 3.5 earthquake struck the Caribbean Sea near Barbuda Island, Antigua and Barbuda, on Tuesday morning, July 2, 2024, at 9:49 AM local time.

The quake, with a very shallow depth of 10 km (6 miles), was reported to have been felt by some individuals near the epicenter.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) was the first to report the earthquake just four minutes after it occurred.

The epicenter was located at a latitude of 17.487°N and a longitude of 61.76°W, approximately 22 km (14 miles) south of Barbuda Island.

The nearest large town, St John’s, the capital of Antigua and Barbuda, lies about 42 km (26 miles) south of the epicenter.

Residents in St John’s and nearby areas, including Codrington on Barbuda Island, reported weak to very weak shaking.

Specifically, Codrington, located 18 km (11 miles) northwest of the epicenter, experienced weak shaking, while St John’s experienced very weak shaking.

The earthquake’s estimated seismic energy release was approximately 1.1 x 10^10 joules, equivalent to about 2.68 tons of TNT. Fortunately, there have been no reports of damage or injuries associated with this seismic event.

Nearby regions, such as Montserrat, Saint Kitts and Nevis, and various locations in Guadeloupe, were too far from the epicenter to feel the quake.

The nearest volcano, Nevis Peak, is located 95 km (59 miles) from the earthquake’s epicenter.

While light earthquakes of this magnitude are not uncommon in the region, they serve as a reminder of the dynamic geological activity in the Caribbean Sea.

Local authorities continue to monitor the situation, ensuring that residents are informed and prepared for any potential aftershocks or further seismic activity.
