The United Progressive Party’s (UPP) candidate, George Wehner, suffered a crushing defeat in the St. Peter by-election. Despite his supporters’ attempts to downplay the loss, claiming he “did a good job,” the numbers tell a different story.
Wehner’s emotional breakdown after the counts were finished was a poignant moment as he hugged his son in tears. The scene starkly reflected the state of the UPP, a party plagued by poor leadership and internal divisions.
The facts are stark: Wehner garnered fewer votes than Trevoughn Harriet, which is a damning indictment of his candidacy. This outcome is all the more striking given Asot Michael’s absence from the race, which should have given Wehner a significant advantage.
Wehner’s reputation as a “crazy military man” has finally caught up with him. His years of creating trouble within the party have alienated many, and his defeat is a direct consequence of his own actions.
The UPP’s leadership, particularly Jamal Pringle and Giselle Isaac, must take responsibility for their role in Wehner’s defeat. Their inability to provide a robust support structure for Wehner’s campaign on the night of the count is a clear indication of their ineptitude.
It’s time for the UPP to confront the harsh reality of their situation. Wehner’s defeat is not just a personal loss but a symptom of a broader problem within the party. Until the UPP addresses these issues, they will continue to stumble from one defeat to another
