Dear Editor,
Some persons may see Mr. George Wehner as arrogant. Others may see him as a bully.
On the flip side others may see him as a pleasant straight forward and no-nonsense person. Of course everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
In my view, confident, focused, coward less, resolute, relentless, resilient, loyal and a true sportsman, are a few words, I think best describes Mr. George Wehner. His temperament & disposition is no different than that of our Prime minister, the Hon Gaston A. Browne.
During the St. Peters by-election, it was evident, that Mr. Wehner displayed to the nation that if he has a job to take on the political enemy by himself, he would so do.
He really displayed the characteristics of a true soldier and a true patriot. He certainly reminded me of Rambo (Sylvester Stallone) in the film of First Blood.
The St. Peters by-election clearly showed us that when a house is divided, it must fall. It was extremely sad to see that Mr. Wehner had very little moral support from his UPP colleagues during that day of the by-election.
Why? Was he among enemies in his own camp or was he surrounded by sheep in fox’s clothing? The hug from his son was much needed for consolation.
Obviously, for the St. Peters by-election, all odds were against Mr. Wehner but, for a just cause, and by any means necessary, Mr. Wehner decided to take on Mr. Turner, his political ABLP enemy.
Mr. Wehner’s 3 weeks to campaign and him coming from a camp that is presently having intense internal issues could not give him justice to go on any political battlefield to combat.
In contrast, Mr. Rawdon Turner, Wehner’s political enemy, had all advantages. St. Peters is an ABLP garrison and inspite of his reserved or introverted personality, Mr. Turner is deemed as a home boy who has an intimate and unbroken relationship with the residents in the constituency, especially with those persons in Parham Town, where he has spent his entire life.
Interestingly, it is well known that in general elections, the electorate are more inspired to go out and cast a vote in order to get the government of their choice.
On the other hand, with by-elections, the enthusiasm from the electorates tends to be different and more on a down low. The statistics speak for itself.
In this St. Peters’ by-election, the enthusiasm from the electorates, was no different. The focus was to vote for a constituency representative which would not make a major difference on the status of the government if there was a win or lose.
Hence, Wehner getting 590 votes in this by-election, 31 votes less than what Mr. Trevaughn Harriet (Peter Redz ) got during a general election, demonstrated a great accomplishment by Mr. Wehner.
Clearly, if it was general election Mr Wehner would certainly surpass the votes of Peter Redz.
UPP certainly needs to get their act together. They seem to be their own enemy and politically shooting themselves in their own feet.
It is evident that they have the political ammunition and manpower to use on a political battlefield, but the leadership seem to be making some absurd decisions by placing square pegs in round holes.
Although Mr. Wehner lost and lost badly in the by-election, he showed the nation some qualities that a true politician should possess. I certainly tip my hat to Mr. Wehner. He fought a good fight.
Going forward, the leadership of UPP needs to be a lot more strategic and invest more in persons like Mr. Wehner who should considered to be placed in the Senate.
