Dear Editor,

I am writing to express my outrage and concern regarding the alarming circumstances surrounding the recent case of a missing girl , 14-year-old Tanijah Cochrane , who, as it turns out, was out enjoying herself while her community was left in fear for her safety.

This incident raises serious questions about the responsibility of both children and parents in today’s society.

How is it possible for a young person to be unaccounted for, especially after having a detention on a Saturday? If there is no clear communication with parents about when to leave school, we are setting children up for dangerous situations.

The responsibility should be shared, but it seems we are failing in fostering an environment where accountability is prioritized.

Moreover, I cannot help but reflect on the nature of the relationships and communication between teachers and parents. In light of tragic events, such as the abduction and murder of Chantel Crump, how can anyone feel safe allowing our children to roam the streets late at night? The current state of affairs indicates a glaring lapse in guidance and oversight.

It is disheartening to think that any child could choose to be out at 11 PM, seemingly indifferent to the dangers that surround them, all while the community’s alarm bells ring loud. This behavior is not just reckless; it reflects a growing disregard for personal safety and community values.

To all parents and guardians out there – it’s crucial to engage in open conversations with your children. And to educators, let’s aim for better communication and support systems so that our youth understand the weight of their choices. We must work together to instill a sense of responsibility, awareness, and care for one another.

We cannot afford to be complacent. The safety of our children should always be our paramount concern. We must be proactive in ensuring that they understand the implications of their actions, fostering a community that values both safety and responsibility.
