Letter to the Editor:

Reconsidering the Curfew Time for Our Youth

Dear Editor,

I commend the government’s commitment to reducing youth loitering and promoting community safety through the new curfew for minors.

However, setting this curfew at 10 p.m. may not be stringent enough to achieve its intended impact.

To better protect our young people and reinforce responsible behavior, I propose implementing an 8:30 p.m. curfew on weeknights and extending it slightly to 9:30 p.m. on weekends.

This adjustment would help ensure that minors are home and safe before late-night risks increase.

Effective enforcement is critical to the success of any curfew. I strongly urge local authorities to step up patrols in key areas to monitor compliance.

Additionally, with many young people attending local fetes, it’s essential to extend this oversight to these events to ensure minors are safely supervised and, where necessary, escorted home in line with the curfew.

The recent proposal by Opposition Leader Jamale Pringle for mandatory ID cards for minors is another practical step toward successful enforcement. These ID cards would allow officers to easily verify ages and curfew compliance, making it simpler to keep minors off the streets at night.

A community that prioritizes the safety of its youth is one that sets a firm foundation for the future. With these measures in place, we can create a safer environment that nurtures responsible behavior among our young people.

Sincerely,

Sincerely, Repeater
