The St. Peter constituency, historically a stronghold of the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP), is set to play a pivotal role in the upcoming by-election. Prime Minister Gaston Browne expressed confidence in the party’s chances of securing victory, citing a robust support base and ongoing infrastructure projects as key factors.
Speaking during a radio interview, Mr. Browne noted that St. Peter has traditionally been a loyal ABLP constituency. However, the last general election saw a split in votes due to internal disputes, leading to the independent re-election of the late Asot Michael. Despite this, he asserted that the majority of voters remained aligned with the Labour Party’s values.
Mr. Browne acknowledged that areas within the constituency, such as Gunthorpes and Lightfoot, have long struggled with poor infrastructure, describing some roads as “unpaved and deteriorated.” He assured residents that significant progress is underway, with roadworks already initiated and further improvements planned in the coming months.
In response to criticisms from opposition members, the Prime Minister dismissed claims of opportunism, stating that infrastructure projects were planned before the by-election and are part of a broader effort to enhance communities across the nation. He also pointed to the government’s recent acquisition of $21 million worth of road repair equipment as evidence of its commitment to long-term development.
The Labour Party’s candidate, Senator Roden Turner, has been actively campaigning to consolidate support, emphasizing his plans to address local concerns. Mr. Browne expressed his confidence in Mr. Turner’s ability to deliver on his promises and strengthen ties with the community.
The by-election comes at a critical juncture for the ABLP, with the outcome likely to reaffirm or challenge its dominance in St. Peter. While the Labour Party remains optimistic, Mr. Browne underlined the importance of continued effort, urging party members and supporters to remain engaged until Election Day.
