Kidney disease prevention drive launched in Barbuda

A new initiative aimed at tackling kidney disease has been launched in Barbuda, focusing on education, early detection and prevention.
The pilot project is being led by the World Kidney Day Team in partnership with the Antigua and Barbuda Samaritan Society, with support from the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre and the Medical Benefits Scheme.
Organisers say the programme is designed to equip residents with the knowledge to protect their kidney health. Activities included community outreach, education sessions and health screenings.
They highlighted diabetes and hypertension as the leading causes of kidney disease, urging residents to manage blood sugar and blood pressure while adopting healthier lifestyles.
Advice also included maintaining a balanced diet based on the six Caribbean food groups, staying hydrated and keeping physically active.
The team thanked residents for their استقبال and said the initiative marks an important step in strengthening preventative healthcare in Barbuda.
