‘I want accountability, not vengeance’: Mother speaks out after son’s killing

The mother of 18-year-old Vonde Bowers has published an emotional open letter addressed to those she says are responsible for her son’s death, calling for accountability while rejecting revenge.
In the letter, titled “To Those Who Robbed My Son of His Future,” Vangetta Hector Francis describes her grief and the loss of her son’s hopes and ambitions.
“I am writing to you not in anger alone, but in the quiet, stubborn testimony of a parent who refuses to let his memory be consigned to silence,” she wrote.
She said her son had been deprived of the chance to fulfil his potential, describing his death as both a personal tragedy and a blow to her family’s sense of safety.
Despite the pain, Ms Francis stopped short of calling for retaliation, instead urging those responsible to reflect on their actions.
“I want you to feel the weight of your actions, not as a spectacle of vengeance, but as a call to accountability and change,” she said.
Her appeal also extended to the wider community, calling for stronger efforts to protect vulnerable people and support grieving families.
She said she hoped her son’s memory would inspire greater collective responsibility and prevention of violence.
The letter concludes with a call for justice and healing, alongside what she describes as a lifelong grief.
“I do not seek revenge in the absence of healing, but I do insist on accountability,” she wrote, signing off as “a mother that will grieve forever”.
The message has since resonated widely, serving as both a tribute and a broader call for change.
