Minister Smith advocates for greater youth participation in the Blue Economy

On Wednesday 11th September, 2024 the Honourable Anthony Smith Jr, Minister of Agriculture, Lands, Fisheries and the Blue Economy participated in the 23rd Eastern Caribbean Ministerial Meeting on Fisheries and Sustainable Use of Living Marine Resources in the Commonwealth of Dominica. The meeting held in collaboration with the Government of Japan and the six Member States of the OECS focused on the opportunities and challenges faced in the fisheries sector.

During his address, Minister Smith called for greater investment and access to finance, as a means of encouraging participation of youth in the fisheries sector. The Minister also stated the need for the Governments within the Region to promote the significant economic opportunities associated with the Blue Economy to develop capacity of the citizens and increase sustainability. The meeting also discussed the regional sargassum crisis; food security and livelihood in the Caribbean; and the upcoming 69th Meeting of the International Whaling Commission (IWC69).

The delegation of Antigua and Barbuda also comprised of His Excellency Mr. Daven Joseph, IWC Commissioner; Mr. Gregory Bailey, Director OG Agriculture; and Mr. Kurt M. Williams, Senior Foreign Service Officer.
