Health Minister: No Significant Threat from Human Metapneumovirus

Health Minister Sir Molwyn Joseph has sought to calm public concerns regarding the human metapneumovirus (HMPV), confirming that the virus poses no significant threat to the people of Antigua and Barbuda.

Addressing his Cabinet, Sir Molwyn highlighted that while cases have been reported globally, including in the United States, claims of a major outbreak in China are overstated. He emphasized that there is no credible evidence of an outbreak in China warranting border closures.

The World Health Organization (WHO), he added, is actively countering misinformation about the virus and its alleged global spread. Sir Molwyn noted that no country has implemented extraordinary measures in response to the situation.

The Ministry of Health continues to advise residents to remain vigilant but assures the public that there is currently no risk of a pandemic.
