World Children’s Day calls us to nurture young minds and ensure that every child has the opportunity to flourish. Few people embody this spirit as profoundly as retired teacher Grandma Mirie. With a 40-year career spent in 10 schools, she has dedicated her life to shaping the hearts and minds of children, reflecting her lifelong passion for youth empowerment.

As part of her Legacy Book Tour, the 90-year-old author, educator, and agro-processor visited Liberta Primary School, where she taught for 9 years. She returned to the school after 70 years to teach students how to make golden apple cheese, one of her treasured recipes.

“This wasn’t just a cooking class—it was a gift of love and life lessons,” she explained. “As these children learn to transform fresh fruit into delicious preserves, they’re also gaining invaluable skills that will stay with them forever. The art of cooking teaches sustainability, creativity and the beauty of teamwork. I hope these lessons help the students to build confidence and discover the joy of creating something with their own hands.”

Grandma Mirie’s commitment to children, however, extends beyond the kitchen. She also donated a copy of her book, Mirie’s Magic Recipe: Loving, Leading, Legacy, to the school’s library. The book captures her experiences as a teacher at Liberta Primary and celebrates the strong bonds she has built with the community. Filled with treasured memories and timeless lessons, the book emphasizes resilience, kindness, financial responsibility and the vital role teachers play in nurturing children’s growth and instilling values that transcend generations.

Grandma Mirie’s legacy is a testament to the belief that holistic education goes beyond textbooks and classrooms. Her cooking class, her book, and her unwavering dedication to the development of children serve as powerful reminders that life’s most profound lessons often emerge from acts of kindness, creativity, and love.

The students thoroughly enjoyed the hands-on cooking experience, which reflects the true essence of World Children’s Day—ensuring every child feels valued, supported and capable of achieving their dreams.
