Government Takes Charge of Fort James Redevelopment Plan

The Cabinet of Antigua and Barbuda has approved a comprehensive redevelopment plan for the Fort James Beach area, with the government taking the lead on a project aimed at preserving the site’s historical significance while expanding its tourism and recreational appeal.
Director General of Communications Maurice Merchant announced the decision during Friday’s post-Cabinet briefing, following Cabinet’s review of a longstanding proposal submitted by Royal Caribbean for the development of the area into a themed attraction.
Cabinet determined that the government, working in collaboration with local stakeholders, would undertake the redevelopment.

Merchant said the project is intended to preserve Fort James’ historical value, enhance its natural beauty and create economic opportunities for Antiguans and Barbudans.
He described the area as one of the country’s most important historical and cultural assets with significant untapped potential as a tourism and recreational destination.
Under the approved concept, Fort James will be transformed into a heritage and leisure attraction while creating opportunities for local entrepreneurs and community stakeholders to participate in the development.
The project will include beach replenishment and shoreline protection works designed to safeguard and enhance the coastline. Existing commercial activities will be reorganized through the creation of designated spaces for vendors and artisans.
Cabinet also endorsed plans to reclaim and develop approximately three acres of land to expand the area’s recreational and entertainment offerings.
The redevelopment is expected to include an amphitheatre and event venue capable of hosting performances, community activities and tourism-related events.
Green spaces and landscaped park areas will also form part of the project, providing additional recreational opportunities for residents and visitors, Merchant said.
