Government Prioritizes Road Repairs in St. Peter Ahead of By-Election

The government has ramped up roadworks in St. Peter, with significant projects underway in several areas as part of efforts to improve infrastructure in the constituency.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne said the use of new equipment, including a pug mill, is expected to accelerate the construction of roller-compacted concrete roads.

Speaking about the improvements, Mr. Browne stated, “We are committed to addressing the deplorable state of roads in communities like Gunthorpes and Lightfoot. These areas have suffered for too long, and we are making significant progress.”

He added that Public Works has been instrumental in executing the projects. “The department has scaled up operations with new equipment and additional manpower. The results are evident in the momentum we’ve seen in St. Peter, particularly in areas like Parham and Pears.”

While acknowledging the timing of the roadworks in relation to the upcoming by-election, the Prime Minister dismissed concerns about political motives. “The work began weeks ago, and it will continue beyond the by-election. This is about improving lives, not politics,” he said.

Plans to modernize infrastructure in privately developed areas were also announced. Mr. Browne suggested legislative changes to ensure developers allocate funds for road construction before projects are approved. “Developments like these ultimately reflect on the government, and we need to hold developers accountable,” he remarked.

The Prime Minister also responded to criticisms about delays in addressing road issues. “We understand the frustration of residents. That’s why we are working to ensure that significant sections of roads are tackled now, with the commitment to continue until the job is done.”

Residents in affected areas, including those in Gunthorpes and Lightfoot, are expected to see more road projects begin in the coming weeks, with assurances that all necessary resources are being mobilized to address the longstanding issues.
