New Chapter, Same Goal: Freeland Vows to Win St. George for ABLP

Newly appointed Senator Michael Freeland has set his sights firmly on reclaiming the St. George constituency for the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP), declaring that the mission ahead requires unity, strategy, and a deep commitment to service.

Freeland, who previously served in the Senate from 2014, returned to the Upper House this week and was officially confirmed as the ABLP’s caretaker for the St. George constituency. In an interview following his appointment, he described the moment as “overwhelming” and credited his return to “hard work being rewarded.”

“This is a return to service, not just in the Senate, but to the people of St. George,” Freeland said. “We’ve lacked proper representation, and now I’m going to show what true representation looks like and feels like.”

With the general elections looming in the distance, Freeland acknowledged that regaining the seat will take more than campaign slogans—it requires collaboration. Since his primary victory, he has reached out to all three of his ABLP challengers: Durell Lorraine, Bisha Francis James, and Selene Brown. All have reportedly agreed to work with him to strengthen the party’s presence in the area.

“The mission is clear—bring St. George back to Labour. Once we have that one common understanding, I have no doubt we’ll work as a team,” Freeland said.

As part of his groundwork, Freeland pointed to ongoing efforts in Potters, where a rapid response team is addressing long-standing drainage issues in preparation for the hurricane season. He credited the initiative to collaboration with Hon. Maria Browne and Senator Clement Antonio and said similar work is planned for other areas like Barnes, New Winthorpes, and Herberts.

Beyond infrastructure, Freeland identified community safety as another priority. He welcomed the recent passage of the Chantel Alert Bill and said he is pushing for increased lighting, more patrols, and stronger support for neighborhood watch groups across St. George.

Freeland also reiterated his long-term vision to develop Antigua and Barbuda’s sports tourism product as a new engine for economic growth. “Just like the CIP, sports tourism can be a serious revenue generator if we get it right,” he said.

Though the road ahead may be challenging, Freeland says he’s prepared for the work—and he’s not walking alone. “This is a family. St. George is one big family. When we work together, we all rise.”
