Foreign Affairs Minister E.P. Chet Greene urged Antigua and Barbuda to broaden its diplomatic reach and enhance global engagement during the opening of a three-day Diplomatic Encounter yesterday. He stressed the need for skilled diplomacy to address the nation’s challenges, including climate change, economic inequality, and human rights.

E.P. Chet Greene quoted former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan: “Diplomacy is a bridge,” and highlighted the importance of diplomats who embody both innovation and national values. He called for deepened ties with Africa, Central and South America, and India, citing opportunities in emerging markets, agriculture, tourism, natural resources, and sustainable energy.

The Minister also emphasized the value of strong relations with Europe, China, and the United States and underscored the importance of climate change resilience. He reaffirmed the role of multilateral platforms like the UN, CARICOM, and OAS in giving small island states a voice on global issues.

Greene concluded by urging diplomats to elevate their efforts, aiming for an inclusive and bold foreign policy that reflects Caribbean values. He also looked forward to hosting the OAS General Assembly later this year and the Commonwealth Heads next year.
