Food Fair Labourers Say Wages Still Outstanding Despite Government Assurances

— A group of labourers who worked at last year’s Food Fair say they are still waiting to be paid, despite public assurances that outstanding wages would be settled.
In a letter dated the 8th and sent to Antigua News Room, one of the affected workers said payments remain outstanding for work carried out during the Food Fair held on November 3.
The worker said a subsequent government article indicated that payments would be made “by Friday,” which many of the labourers interpreted as Friday the 13th. However, they say no payments have been received.
“We respect freedom of speech and believe it is our right to speak openly about issues that affect us,” the letter stated. “It is not right for statements to be made to the public suggesting that matters have been resolved when they have not.”
The labourers said workers depend on their earnings and called for greater transparency and accountability in the handling of the matter.
“We, the Food Fair labourers, are still waiting to be paid what is owed to us,” the letter added.
There has been no immediate update from officials regarding the outstanding payments.
