Synopsis: Light winds and relatively high humidity could cause the heat index to rise to excessive levels, resulting in dangerously hot conditions. The risk of health problems, especially for sensitive individuals, is medium.

An excessive heat watch is issued when conditions are conducive to an excessive heat event in the next 24 to 72 hours, though the timing may still be uncertain. The threshold heat index temperature for a watch is 38 °C (100 °F) or higher for two or more consecutive days, with winds typically at 18 km/h (11 mph) or less.

Sensitive Groups: While extreme heat can put everyone at risk for heat-related illnesses, the greatest health risks are for the elderly, young children, lactating mothers, individuals with chronic illnesses (such as respiratory issues, heart conditions, or psychiatric disorders), outdoor workers, those who exercise in the heat, homeless individuals, and low-income earners.

Health Implications: Heat-related illnesses—such as heat stroke, exhaustion, fainting, cramps, rash, and edema—are preventable but can lead to long-term health issues or even death.

Caution: If any symptoms of heat illness are present (e.g., dizziness, fainting, nausea, vomiting, headache, rapid breathing, rapid heartbeat, or extreme thirst), immediately move to a cool place and drink liquids—water is best.

The most dangerous heat illness is heat stroke, with symptoms including confusion, complete or partial loss of consciousness, and high body temperature. If caring for someone with these symptoms, call 911 immediately.

While waiting for help, move the person to a cool place, apply cold water to large areas of the skin or clothing, and fan the person as much as possible.

Precautions: Stay cool and hydrated. Check on vulnerable family members, friends, and neighbors.
