Environmental Awareness Group Marks World Mangrove Day With Conservation Appeal

— The Environmental Awareness Group (EAG) is encouraging the public to recognize the importance of mangrove ecosystems as it marks World Mangrove Day, highlighting the role the coastal forests play in protecting Antigua and Barbuda’s environment.

In a message issued to commemorate the observance, the organization said it was joining communities around the world in celebrating one of the planet’s most important ecosystems.

The EAG noted that it continues to promote mangrove conservation through initiatives including field trips, its Floating Classroom programme, AdvenTours and public presentations aimed at educating residents about the ecological value of mangroves.

According to the organization, mangroves help protect coastlines from erosion and storm surges, provide habitat for wildlife and contribute to the sustainability of coastal communities. The group urged the public to support conservation efforts by raising awareness of the importance of preserving the country’s remaining mangrove forests. 

The organization also signalled that additional activities and announcements related to mangrove conservation will be shared in the coming days.

World Mangrove Day, formally known as the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem, is observed annually on July 26 to promote the protection and sustainable management of mangrove habitats worldwide.
