Emancipation Watchnight 2026 Planned for Botanical Gardens

The Antigua and Barbuda Reparations Support Commission is inviting the public to attend Emancipation Watchnight 2026, an evening of music, culture and reflection marking the 192nd anniversary of Emancipation.

The event is scheduled for Friday, July 31, beginning at 8 p.m. at the Botanical Gardens. Admission is free.

According to the Commission, the watchnight celebration will feature performances by the Nyabinghi Drummers, Wadadli Vybez Band, Antigua Dance Academy, Da Vibz Steel Band, Point Iron Band, calypso renditions, spoken word artists and Anansi storytelling.

The programme will also feature internationally acclaimed performer and educator Kim Pole. Attendees will also hear a message from renowned Caribbean historian Professor Hilary Beckles, Vice-Chancellor of The University of the West Indies and chairman of the CARICOM Reparations Commission.

Organizers describe the event as an opportunity for the public to experience “an unforgettable night of music, culture, history and pride” as Antigua and Barbuda commemorates the abolition of slavery and honors the legacy of those who fought for freedom.

Emancipation Watchnight is one of the country’s annual observances leading into Emancipation Day on August 1, celebrating the resilience, heritage and contributions of African descendants in Antigua and Barbuda.
