Senior education officials, including Minister Daryll Matthew and Director of Education Clare Browne, visited Five Islands Primary on Monday to support students and staff following the tragic abduction and murder of 9-year-old Chantel Crump, a former student.

Chantel was reported missing Wednesday, and her body was found at Weatherills Friday night. Acknowledging the heavy atmosphere on the school’s first full day back, Browne felt it was crucial to be present.

“I wanted to share in the grief and extend the ministry’s full support,” he said, recalling the profound sorrow in the classrooms, particularly upon seeing Chantel’s empty desk adorned with a flower.

To assist in coping with the loss, the ministry has deployed 14 counselors to provide support to students and staff.
